The first day of the Challenger in Novi Sad is finished on specially made courts for this purpose. That tournament has the status of challenger and has a level of strength right behind the Masters. That challenger is the entrance card for Masters in Lausanne which will be held on August 28. Two best-placed teams from the challenger in Novi Sad will earn a spot in Switzerland.
Seven out of the best ten ranked teams in the world took part in this year’s competition on Square of Liberty in Novi Sad. Three Serbian teams will play in front of their crowd and those are Ub, Liman, and Pirot. We don’t have to waste a word on Ub who won two tournaments already on World Tour. They are coming with a lot of self-confidence and reliance on their abilities.
Liman, led by Aleksandar Ratkov and Mihailo Vasic who play for a national squad of Serbia, is a serious title contender and they will have a big motivation right here. Pirot, on the other hand, starts the competition from the qualification round. Pirot will be represented by Dragan Bjelica, Lazar Rasic, Aleksandar Nikolic I Dusan Filipovic.
The twelve teams will be divided into four groups of three players. Every team plays two games on Friday 4 June and two first-placed teams go to the quarterfinals. On the first day, we saw a clash between Ub and Austrian Vienna. Vienna, led by Stefan Stojacic, older brother of Strahinja Stojacic defeated favorites in a thriller with 21-19. Other than that, we didn’t see any major upset on the first day of the tournament.
On the second day, we are expecting exciting quarterfinals and the schedule starts at 6 pm. Vienna plays against Lithuanian Sakiai, Amsterdam will face Princeton, Liman will go against Riga, and finally, Ub will have a strong opponent in Antwerp.
