Six men’s and four women’s teams didn’t have to play qualification for Europe Cup. They have already qualified by winning the last edition of the Europe Cup in Paris, or they are hosts, or by official Federation ranking. Europe Cup 2022 will be hosted by Graz in Austria on September 9 – 11. Graz already hosted last year’s Olympic Qualifying tournament.
Fourteen other teams were missing to fill the gap in the list of all participants in the Europe Cup. The qualification tournaments took place in Israel, Romania, and Cyprus last weekend and there were a lot of fun and nerve-racking games across Europe.
Netherland, Portugal, Switzerland, and Lithuania in the women’s category qualified from Israel qualifier. Lithuania got its place in Graz as the best fourth-placed country. Switzerland finished first in the very equal competition thanks to their star Marriele Giroud who scored the deciding free throw against Portugal. Portugal will play for the first time in the final tournament in September.
Israel finished the tournament without defeat in the men’s competition in Tel Aviv in Israel. Slovenia also got the ticket for Austria after they won against Switzerland in deciding game. Joaquin Szuchman got a reward as Most Valuable Player of Tournament alongside Marriele Giroud in the women’s category.
Romania, Poland, and Estonia qualified from the women’s side for the final phase of competition from qualification in Constanța in Romania. Montenegro, Poland, and Hungary (as the best third-place team) qualified for the Europe Cup 2022 in the men’s category.
Finally, Cyprus’ women and Azerbaijan’s men clinched a place in the final tournament from a qualifier in Cyprus. Azerbaijan won 20-16 in the final game against Ireland. On the other hand, Cyprus women deserved first place by winning 15-12 in the final game against Luxembourg.
Serbia won the last edition of the Europe Cup in the men’s category and Spain women’s national squad lifted the trophy in the women’s category. Hold your breath, everything is ready for the thrilling and entertaining Europe Cup.
