Supporters could witness an unexpected scenario during San Juan Challenger last weekend in Puerto Rico.
Challenger started to heat up when it had to be stopped suddenly on Saturday. Safety risks appeared with the passing of Fiona hurricane on September 17. The event had to be canceled to maintain the safety of the teams, officials, and spectators.
Let’s briefly review what occurred until the cancelation of the competition.
On Saturday, Old Montreal qualified from qualifying draw A. Lausanne got a ticket from qualifying draw B.
Eight games from the group stage were played on the same day.
In group A, San Juan beat Ub with 21-13. Ub pulled out a 21-16 victory over Omaha.
Antwerp won against Old Montreal with 21-15 in pool B. Antwerp defeated Warsaw with 21-13.
In pool C, Princeton and Santiago should have played the first fixture. The game was forfeited and Princeton came out as the winner. Dusseldorf beat Princeton with 20-18.
Vienna pulled out a 21-11 victory over Los Angeles in group D. Vienna defeated Lausanne with 21-13.
The remaining games in all four groups were canceled due to the passing of Fiona hurricane.
All FIBA regulations regarding 3×3 basketball apply to the Pro Circuit. Pro Circuit has an official handbook that contains provisions about FIBA 3×3 basketball.
In this concrete case, Pro Circuit Handbook says “If a Pro Event had started (i.e. at least one game has been played) but was not completed (e.g. the final game did not take place) due to force majeure, the non-played games will be decided using the seeding numbers. No score will be attributed to such games, which will be recorded only as W-L (Win-Loss).”
That means that the winners of the remaining four fixtures in the pool stage were determined by using seeding numbers.
Ub finished second-placed in group A and Antwerp ended up as the first-placed team in pool B. Serbian team out-seeded Antwerp because they have a better overall ranking and “won the game in the semifinal”. Consequently, no.3 seed Princeton was the runner-up of the tournament.
Ub and Princeton will participate in the Paris Masters in World Tour 2022 on October 7-8.
