Canyon Barry, a guy who wants to continue the tradition

NBA is having a long history and this league has produced such a big number of amazing stories over the past 76 years. Basketball, in general, had many great players who could score, assist, or block amazingly.

This beautiful game stayed popular over such a long period through many generations Dell Curry and Steph Curry, Joe Bryant, and Kobe Bryant, Mychal Thompson, and Klay Thompson are examples of those successful father-son pairs.

Based on this introduction, we are going to talk about talented USA 3X3 player Canyon Barry. Rick Barry, the popular NBA player, was the father of the hero of our story.

What did Canyon’s college days look like?

Playing college basketball for three years at the college of Charleston and scoring 19.7 points per game in junior year recommended him to the University of Florida.

Senior year at Florida University was not so good in the context of received minutes, but excellent in terms of scoring. Also, Barry set a record at Florida Gators school record for the number of free throws made in a row- 42.

What were the next steps for Barry in his career?

After earning NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Academic All-American of the Year and going undrafted in NBA Draft in 2017, Barry decided to take part in New York’s squad in NBA Summer League.

Following participation in NBA Summer League, Canyon went overseas and signed a contract with Finnish team Salon Vilpas Vikings for the 2017-2018 campaign.

The adventure in Finland didn’t last long, so Rick’s son moved to the Czech Republic where he put his signature on a deal with Brno. On February 28, 2018, ex Florida University star made a career-high number of rebounds in a loss to Ostrava – 12.

What was next Canyon’s destination after the Czech Republic?

Following short stints in NBA Summer League in 2018 and 2019 with Orlando and Minnesota respectively, Barry agreed with team Iowa Wolves to represent them in NBA G League. After being waived by Timberwolves, Canyon wanted to give a shot in a different surrounding.

What happened with Barry in the second season in Iowa Wolves?

First Canyon’s season in the Wolves was lucrative both for the team and the player, so the fans expected a similar scenario in second Barry’s campaign in Iowa’s shirt.

Former Brno shooting guard averaged 6.3 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game shooting 48.3 % and 36.2 % from the field goal and three-point, respectively. Rick’s successor started only 2 fixtures out of 19 overall in which he represented the squad. G League turned out to be a good environment that suited perfectly to Barry’s style of play.

His second season in the NBA Development League was terminated due to Covid 19 – pandemic, so the 2019/2020 campaign didn’t have a champion officially.

What occurred with Canyon in the third campaign in Iowa?

Starting only 3 games for the Wolves in the pandemic 2020/2021 season was something Canyon didn’t expect. However, he managed to score 12.9 points, grabbing 3.4 rebounds, and making 2.1 assists during his third season in Iowa per game which was a fantastic individual result given the circumstances.

NBA G League stayed his main ambition, so the ex-college star remained a member of the Iowa roster for next season.

Wolves suffered because of Canyon Barry’s performances, so they finished the Western Conference in 7th place with a 15-17 score not qualifying for the playoff. The agony of this squad continued after a poor 2-13 score and last place in the league in 2021.

How successful was Canyon Barry in the national squad?

Debut performance in the USA national squad Canyon had in the 2019 World Cup held in the Dutch capital Amsterdam. Kareem Maddox, Robbie HummelDamon Huffman, and Canyon Barry were a powerful quartet that conquer the planet in those five days.

Canyon Barry’s team won four games in the pool stage and three more in the elimination stage to convincingly lift the trophy. First-ever gold medal in the World Cup came to the USA by beating Latvia in deciding fixture with 18-14. Barry finished the competition scoring 39 points and contributed a lot to qualification to the Olympic Qualifying tournament.

What was the first Canyon Barry’s season in FIBA World Tour?

Joining the 3×3 and entering team Princeton was a logical consequence of Canyon’s feeling that he outgrew the competition in the NBA Development League after four seasons. Kareem MaddoxRobbie Hummel, and Craig Moore were already involved in the roster which was additionally strengthened by Barry’s arrival.

Big Canyon’s contribution to Princeton results came during the 2021 Cergy – Pontoise Challenger where the newcomer scored 29 points overall. Eventually, The USA team won the trophy. Canyon Barry pushed his teammate to give maximum, as Robbie Hummel ended the tournament as MVP with 39 scored points.

Before the start of the inaugural AmeriCup 2021, the USA squad was announced for this competition:  Trey BardsleyCanyon BarryCharlie Brown Jr., and Kareem Maddox. USA won all five games and won the championship, so Barry had reason to be happy.

Princeton’s teammates Kareem Maddox and Canyon Barry together with Jimmer Fredette and Dylan Travis were called for the 2022 AmeriCup and pulled out a dramatic 21-18 victory in the final game against Puerto Rico. Barry was named MVP of the tournament scoring 6.8 points per game.

How were Barry’s performances in the 2022 World Tour?

Tyron Nash, Kareem Maddox, Isaiah Wilkerson, Canyon Barry, Damon Huffman, and Robbie Hummel were players who represented team Princeton throughout the 2022 World Tour. Princeton didn’t win the trophy being closest to achieving that result in Utsunomiya Opener in Japan.

Ub, champion of the 2022 World Tour, pulled out a victory over the USA team in the final in the Japanese Masters with 22-16 and crushed Canyon’s hopes of winning the major FIBA 3×3 tournament. Taking place in Challengers and Masters last year was a massive boost for Barry’s career in 3×3 basketball.

Kanyon is part of a famous basketball family in the USA, so he had a lot of pressure to continue the tradition from his father. His underhand free throws are legendary in the world and his willpower to train constantly are his biggest traits in this beautiful game.

Playing under mental pressure is maybe something Barry has space to make improvements in. Despite this flaw, Kanyon Barry won many trophies with the national squad. Will he add any more silverware with USA and Princeton?

Rick’s son is having so much time in front of him to become a mythological figure in 3×3 basketball. Tell us your insights about this player.
