Germany finished as a first-placed team at the second stop in this year’s Women’s Series. After a successful performance in Tel Aviv in Israel on May 28-29, they continued their winning streak. Disappointing results at World Cup didn’t shake at all. German ladies and German best player, no. 1 player in the world, Sonja Greinacher.
There were four groups with three teams in this competition. Each team played against every other team in the group once and two first-placed teams in the pool qualified for the quarterfinals stage. According to 3×3 experts, the main favorites for the title were Germany, the USA, and Italy.
Germany played in group A together with Italy and Slovakia. Germany beat Italy with 13-9 in the first match in the tournament. Germany won against Slovakia with 21-5. Germany secured first place with two relatively easy wins in the group and they were playing in the elimination round with the second-placed team in group C, Turkey.
The USA had Turkey and Latvia in group C. First, the USA defeated Turkey with 21-10. In a second match, the USA made a 15-12 victory against Latvia. The USA finished the group in the first place and they were expecting in the quarterfinal the team ranked second in pool A, Italy.
Germany won games against Turkey and Hungary on the road to the final. Italy and Israel were standing on the US way to the game for the title and USA successfully passed through them.
Germany had an advantage practically in the whole game against the USA in the final game. The USA threatened at the finish of the game, but Sonja Greinacher showed her class and scored two decisive points. Germany beat the USA with 21-17.
Sonja Greinacher ended up final fixture with six points and got the MVP award. Cierra Burdick, the USA player, scored eight points against Germany. The next stop will be played in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, on July 1-2.
