Fifth Asian cup is set to start

The popularity of this sport has reached Asia also and it’s spreading like a virus among the Asian population. The first laureate was Qatar in 2013 and that country also won the World cup in this highly dynamic game. The country that has the most trophies on the continental level is Australia. Twelve countries were competing in the last Asian cup in man competition for the title and that number has raised this year to an unbelievable 30. Asian and Oceanian teams have the right to participate in this tournament which was previously held in 2019.

The games will take place in Marina Bay Sands in Singapore from July 7 to 10, 2022. The interesting fact is that FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup will be the first-ever competition to get awarded the international sustainability standard. Another curiosity is that the inaugural Youth Olympic Games were held in Singapore and that the first-ever game 3×3 game was played there. The main draw is set to start on the third day of the competition with an equal number of teams in each gender – 12.

In the man’s tournament, only three teams have secured a place in the main draw. Those countries are Mongolia, Singapore, and Australia.  The rest of the squads would have to go first through a qualification draw. That practically means that there will be 9 groups consisting of three teams. There are many widely known teams like Qatar, China, and South Korea. They will have to sweat a lot to qualify for the main draw. It promises an exciting tournament with the possibility of shocking surprises.  The competition is getting tougher and that attracts the audience to the court.

In woman’s competition, the situation is a bit different since there are only 7 teams that qualified directly for the main draw. Those countries are Singapore, Australia, Mongolia, Chinese Taipei, China, Japan, and Sri Lanka. The others will have to participate in a qualification draw and we will get contenders for the title out of five groups where only the winner advances to the next stage. We surely will have a good time on the street courts of Singapore.
