Ten years ago first name Dejan and last name Majstorovic were pretty much anonymous in the world of 3×3 basketball. During the last decade, Dejan showed the auditorium his amazing personality and skills on the court and became one of the best players in the history of this sport. Majstorovic has an interesting story full of ups and downs and now you have the opportunity to hear it finally. The next couple of paragraphs will explain to you why he is the owner of so many trophies and the reason we expect he will continue his glorious road to many more in the future.
What were Majstorovic’s beginnings?
Dejan Majstorovic didn’t participate in Serbian’s first title of World Champions. Basketball is his main preoccupation since he was 13 years old. He played 3×3 basket in local competitions on Serbian ground but didn’t even know that Serbia became World Champion. Players who represented Serbia were beaten by Maestro four or five times. News about the trophy won in the World Cup came to him on the street . Maestro’s performances on the street courts caught the eye of newly-crowned champions.
How did Dejan start to play for Serbia?
Dejan Majstorovic was unavailable for World Cup in 2013 due to his injury and that was disappointing news for the Serbian team. Next year finally things clicked and he could represent his nation in such a major competition. World Cup in 2014 in Moscow was a chance for Majstorovic to show his fine play and moves in front of the global 3×3 basketball auditorium. He was supposed to go to China to play club basketball, but Dusan Bulut persuaded him to come to Russia to play World Championship. Dejan Majstorovic trained three weeks before the start of the tournament to be completely ready for it.
How was his performance in World Cup in Russia in 2014?
Dejan was shining like the brightest star during all games before the final against Qatar. He even showed Shammgod move against Romania and impressed the whole world at that moment. Majstorovic imitated his compatriot and classic 5×5 basketball player, Dejan Bodiroga. In the final game, Majstorovic missed some important open shots and joined his team in average performance. Serbia finished that championship with a silver medal and the general rating on that competition for Maestro was solid.
How did he get the nickname Maestro?
You probably wonder why I mentioned in the last paragraph the word “Maestro”. It was his nickname and he got it because he always performs masterpieces on the court. He can score from long distances and run behind the opponent’s back for easy buckets. His skills are not doubtful and he rarely puts the ball down for dribbling. What was the biggest disappointment in Maestro’s career?
The biggest disappointment is Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021. Serbia was aiming gold medal and was the main favorite for the trophy. After the convincing group phase, Serbia lost surprisingly the semifinal game against ROC (Russian Olympic Committee). Serbian players, including Maestro, were devastated and desperate after a shocking defeat. Dejan Majstorovic points out that loss as the biggest and most tragic moment in his career for now. Serbia redeemed in the game for third place which she won, but that defeat remains somewhere in the brain of Maestro.
What are the main characteristics of Majstorovic’s style of play?
Dejan can score from practically every position with the same percentage of accuracy. Majstorovic can play good and tough defense on opponent’s players and he can contribute to that segment of play. Maestro can impress the audience with fast running and effective layups and his fighting spirit doesn’t let him surrender even when his team loses. Rare games are when Dejan is not successful in one of these dimensions: rebounds, assists, and shots. He is having strong mental abilities. Maestro can recover quickly after defeat and came back to the court to the new game as nothing happened previously.
Which medal is Maestro’s favorite?
Dejan Majstorovic claims that his favorite medal is the gold won in Antwerp World Cup 2022. World Cup in Belgium was a chance for some Serbian players to debut on the global scene. Strahinja Stojacic and Marko Brankovic played for the first time and Mihailo Vasic didn’t have a gold medal in World Cups. Dejan Majstorovic was a leader with huge experience and their road to first place was not easy. The first day of the championship was especially hard as they were on the edge of hell. His father drove Dejan to the training ground when he was young and he supported him in pursuing his career. Maestro was told that he doesn’t have to be the best player in history, but had to give 200 percent of his abilities. Dejan started to train harder and harder and it paid off in his later career. His parents were a huge help and source of confidence for Maestro. Majstorovic adopted the advice that he never should give up on his goals and that his potential with proper work can be enough for success. He learned a life lesson that his 3 of 3 can be better and more significant than someone’s 4 of 10.
What does Maestro’s club career look like?
Maestro was a member of team Novi Sad which is still considered as the best team in the history of 3×3. Dejan Majstorovic, Dusan Bulut, Tamas Ivosev, and Marko Savic were players in Novi Sad. His partnership with Dusan Bulut is famous there.They were the best team in World Tour in 2014, 2015, 2018, and 2019. Novi Sad was unbeaten in the 2018 season and they put themselves in the golden book of records in this sport. Unfortunately, in February 2021 every one of those four players went their own way. Maestro and Savic signed for Serbian team Ub where he finished the competition in the quarterfinal of the World Tour.
How does Majstorovic act off the court?
Majstorovic said that he sometimes argues with his teammates during training before a match. Preparations for the fixture can have tension and, normally, sometimes there is a stronger foul than usual. Dejan and his teammates solve those situations very fast so they could not affect their performance on the court. Dejan and his team also don’t blame each other after the defeat, but they try to find the cause of the defeat. Maestro loves to play UNO cards, he is afraid of snakes and he enjoys drinking coffee in a coffee shop called “Cafemat” in Novi Sad.
What are his further intentions in his career?
Dejan Majstorovic has the intention to be a coach and to follow the steps of his former teammate in Serbia, Marko Zdero. Dejan expressed his desire to stay in 3×3 basketball after retirement. Majstorovic is not 100 percent sure whether he will be a coach and he will wait for a little while to make the final decision. Maestro has plans to represent Serbia in the next Olympic Games in Paris in 2026. He will be then 38 years old, but he is determined to accomplish maybe his biggest dream- to become an Olympic champion.
Maestro, Bulut, and Savic have four titles of champions of the world. Dejan’s focus on the present moment and desire to be the best he could be enabled him to win so many trophies in his lucrative career. Maestro’s story is proof that humbleness, hard work, and never- surrender mentality can take any person to unimaginable heights.
