Introduction to 3x3 Learn

Traditional Basketball, Streetball, and 3×3 Basketball

Although 3×3 is an independent discipline, it is heavily influenced by streetball and old-school basketball. The similarities are evident, but the differences also stand out.

3×3 is similar to streetball and old-school basketball because the goal is to score more points than opponents in shooting the ball through the hoop. It follows the same guidelines for shooting and dribbling in addition to other aspects. 3×3 has taken elements from both of these styles. Its accessibility, culture, and urban feel are more like streetball. However, its strict rules and structured competition platform within a professional organization are more in line with traditional basketball.

In terms of playing style, 3×3 is a blend of both styles since old-school basketball has traditionally been a game of discipline and structure. Still, street basketball is all about flexibility, creativity, and impulsive decisions. Because of the many similarities between the two sports, many people think that playing well in traditional basketball is equivalent to being great at 3×3.

This could be the case to some extent since the skills and techniques of one sport can be easily transferred to other. A more specific answer to the question will be provided in the future, but it is essential to be aware that the fact that there are fewer participants on the court, a less time to shoot, and a smaller size court allows 3×3 to be an alternative with different style and dynamism, which means it’s played differently from old school basketball. The gap between these two sports is likely to grow over time regarding their style of play as well as rules and training routine as 3×3 is continuing to develop its own unique identity.
