Big3 Big3 players Players Reviews

Ricky Davis, controversial basketball veteran

The most glamorous league is a great ground for a basketball players to show what they are made of. NBA was popular now, but it was enormously watched in the 2000s. Big Michael Jordan was retiring in that decade and one player started attracting attention. His unconventional behavior was noticed by spectators and the board of teams.

Ladies and gentlemen, we are talking about Ricky Davis. Ricky was undoubtedly a quality player who can help any team he plays in. In front of you is a story about this shooting guard and small forward. You can inform yourself how did his career look like in NBA and later Big3.

How did Ricky’s odyssey in NBA begin?

Davis was picked by Charlotte in the first round of the 1998 Draft Pool. Ricky was chosen as the 21st pick overall by the Hornets. Ricky Davis was remembered well for his intensity in play and aggressive dunks.

This player didn’t get the expected number of minutes on the court in those two seasons. His poster dunk enabled him to participate in Dunk Contest in 2000. Hero of our paragraphs lost in that competition against Vince Carter. Charlotte sent him to Miami Heat in the summer of 2000.

How did Ricky’s time in Miami go?

This player was part of a big trade in August 2020 and Davis ended up in Florida. His time in Heat didn’t go well because he had an injury of knee and ankle.  Ricky Davis represented Miami Heat in only seven games.

The epilogue was sending the hero of our story to Cleveland Cavaliers in an agreement that involved three teams in October 2021. Toronto was also a member of an exchange.

What happened with Ricky in Cleveland?

Cavaliers made another signing with Davis on August 2002. Unfortunately, his part of a career in Cleveland was marked by disagreements with coach Paul Silas. Ricky Davis was behaving immaturely in some games.

He was intentionally trying to improve his personal score without any benefit to his team. The audience was shocked and Cleveland’s player must have felt embarrassed because of this move. Cavaliers made the decision not to punish him because they thought humiliation was enough for Ricky. Public pressure on the club to sanction him was huge, so the board of the club decided to fine him with the sum of money which was not revealed.

His teammates were negatively surprised by his behavior of Davis. Even the opponent’s coach was angry at him.

Where did Davis continue his NBA career?

Ricky was transferred to Boston together with Chris Mihm, Michael Stewart, and Boston’s right to choose a second-round pick on draft, while Tony Battle, Eric Williams, and Kendrick Brown went in the opposite direction. Ricky Davis was performing for the Celtics in a position of shooting guard and small forward position when that was needed.

Fans of Boston were skeptical about signing this player due to his vanity in the past. Board of Boston was convinced that his selfishness can be transformed into something constructive. It paid off for them as Ricky Davis found more consistency in his play.

What was the next station in Ricky’s path in American basketball?

After three years spent in Massachusetts, Davis found a new team on his road to glory.  Ricky Davis made deal with the Timberwolves in January, 2006. Ricky was sent to Minnesota along with Mark Blount, Marcus Banks, Justin Reed, and two second-round picks in the draft in exchange for Wally Szczerbiak, Michael Olowokandi, Dwayne Jones, and a first-round pick.

This player ended his collaboration with Minnesota Timberwolves in October, 2007. Miami signed him again and they admitted their regret over letting him go in 2001. Pat Riley was his coach again.

How was his second time in Miami?

Ricky spent only one season in Florida before he put his signature on a contract with Los Angeles Clippers in July 2008. La Clippers, the second-best time in Los Angeles, waived him in 2010 to have more space for two other players. Davis represented this team on 36 occasions in his second season in California.

His career was in a downward spiral. Ricky Davis had reason to be concerned over his existence and future in NBA. When he was 30 years old, Ricky had to look for another team.

Which team was the next step in Ricky’s biography?

Ricky Davis decided to go overseas and try a different playing environment. This player didn’t have anything to lose with this decision. Ricky agreed on terms with Turk Telekom, the Turkish team, and was thrilled about the new experience in his career.

It was a short-term collaboration and soon after he continued to play in Chinese, French, and Puerto Rico leagues. Davis had his time in the NBA development league as he was signed by Maine Red Claws in 2011.  This shooting guard made deal with Erie BayHawks of the NBA D-League.  Retirement from professional basketball came in 2014.

Has Ricky tried to play in 3×3 basketballs after retirement?

Ricky Davis was appointed as a co-captain of Ghost Ballers, the Big3 team, in 2017. This team had a very strong squad ahead of the start of the first season. Their roster included Mike Bibby as captain, Maurice Evans, Marcus Banks, and Ivan Johnson. Ghost Ballers ended the regular season with a score of 4-4 and took excellent fourth place in the standing. They clinched the playoff which was a tremendous result. Trilogy defeated Ghost Ballers with 50-39 and crushed their hopes of winning the title in the debut season of Fireball. However, it was great to see Davis playing again on the court.

What occurred with Davis further in Big3?

Ricky remained a member of Ghost Ballers for the 2018 season and he had high ambitions. The whole team was hoping for the best, but the team took last place in the Big3 standings. Davis was desperate and something didn’t click in the roster in the second season. You can watch Ricky’s best moments in second season here:

The third season brought improvement regarding several victories for Ricky’s team. They had a 4-4 score, but still couldn’t repeat the result from 2017 and failed to qualify for the final 4.

Did Ricky change the team in the Fireball franchise?

Davis stayed loyal to the Ballers in the fourth season. He played a different role in the offensive part of their play, but his presence remained significant. Chris Johnson and Mike Taylor took over the scoring responsibilities in 2021. Ghost Ballers took seventh place with four wins and four losses. It was not sufficient for getting a card for the playoff.

Ghost Ballers kept Ricky for the 2022 season and collaboration between those two continued. The majority of the roster stayed the same and they were aiming for entering the Best Four.  Unfortunately, things didn’t happen as expected and the maximum of this squad was eighth place in the standings. Another disappointing season is behind Davis.

Ricky was big potential and talent when he appeared in American basketball circles. Despite that, his egocentrism and emotional immaturity stopped his growth and development.  Injuries also contributed to his underachievement in the most prestigious basketball national league in the world. Ricky Davis expressed his regret many times over how things were done in his career.

This player firmly decided to look forward and his psychological improvement is evident. His playing biography and rising from dust inspired me to write these paragraphs.  Ricky Davis is the first and last name everybody who watches NBA heard at least once.
