The sixth edition of the Asia Cup is over and this continent got the winner in the men’s category yesterday in the dramatic culmination of the tournament. The women’s tournament was maybe not so interesting, but supporters could also enjoy phenomenal performances by the gold medalist. Mongolia and Australia are champions of the 2023 Asia Cup in the male and female categories, respectively.
In the men’s part of the draw, there were four groups with four teams. The first-ranked team and second-ranked team in each group qualified for the quarterfinal.
Mongolia was the first-placed team in group A, while Singapore took second place.
Australia was the team with the highest ranking in pool B, while New Zealand ended the group stage behind the Aussies in the “group of death”.
China was the winner of group C and the second team that qualified for the Top 8 was Kazakhstan.
Finally, the best-ranked team in pool D was Iran. The runner-up in the same group was Qatar with one win and one loss.
Australia pulled out a 16-13 victory over Qatar in the first quarterfinal. China beat Singapore with 21-14. Mongolia defeated Kazakhstan with 21-11. New Zealand won against Iran with 20-18.
Australia defeated China with 18-17 in a super-thrilling semifinal. Mongolia pulled out a victory over New Zealand with 19-18.
Eventually, Mongolia made an upset and beat Australia in the game for the gold medal with 21-18. Subsequently, Delgernyam Davaasambuu was named MVP of the FIBA 3X3 Asia Cup.

In the ladies’ part of the draw, Australia was dominant throughout the whole tournament and passed the group stage easily. Australian ladies won convincingly against Chinese Taipei with 21-4 in the quarterfinal. The Aussies beat China with 21-16 in the semis to reach the final against New Zealand.
Australian women’s squad pulled out a 21-11 victory over New Zealand claiming the trophy. Marena Whittle led the champions during the competition with 43 points and got the MVP award.

Winners in both categories received a place in the qualifying tournament for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
